Welcome to GiveBack
GiveBack, Inc. is a recovery group for traumatic brain injury (TBI). Its purpose is not to help survivors to accept new lives that offer them limited options, but rather to help recoverers to deal with their deficits, improve their functioning, become active, and regain self-control of their lives. Survivors are to be respected and honored for having survived, but recoverers go on to realize their untapped potential to live productive lives again.
The GiveBack approach to recovery is energized and empowered by support, inspiration and faith, but it is guided by recovery facts and by neuroscience. Support and inspiration, like time, medication, therapies, counseling and education, have not proven to be the essential ingredients in great recoveries for the majority of survivors.
Our experiences in six brain rehabilitation hospitals, and the results obtained by the most respected rehabilitation experts around the world, make it clear that the essential ingredient in brain recovery is strategies. We have found that there are only a few ways to defeat deficits, and they all revolve around teaching yourself to do things in a different way. The best recoveries are based on using these strategies. They are not common-sense solutions. Controlling deficits requires learning and using specialized strategies for TBI. GiveBack offers a unique collection of these strategies to recoverers in a book titled “Self-Therapy for Head Injury: Teaching Yourself to Prevent Head-Injured Moments.” The entire book is posted on this Web site in the Resources section.
We also offer a companion book for family members: “Helping Your Family Member to Recover From a Head Injury.” As you probably know, family members cannot make recovery happen–-only the recoverer can do that. But family can be of great help to the recoverer, and this book outlines strategies for doing that.
We GiveBack trainers are all recoverers from severe injuries who have rebuilt effective and satisfying lives. We did it by using the same strategies in the books, and by putting a heart and soul into the daily challenge of making our damaged brains work well enough to get good grades in school, hold well-paying jobs, and rewarding relationships. If you become a recoverer with us, we will encourage you to read the book, learn and use the strategies, commit your best efforts to recovery, and then join us in helping others who are just starting down the road we are walking.
